How to Get the Most Out of Your Free Pinterest Tailwind Account

Tailwind is the powerhouse of tools when it comes to Pinterest marketing. But what happens when your trial runs out and, for whatever reason, you can’t sign up for a monthly paid plan? The free account actually has pretty good features that will still save you time and increase your reach, helping you get to the point where you can sign up for a plus plan.

The Tailwind Publisher Extension

Having an extension that lets you automatically add pins to your queue is a must. Some other schedulers allow you to schedule pins, but you have to manually upload the image and type in the associated text and link.

In addition to just adding pins to your queue, at the same time you can also schedule to multiple boards (see board lists below) and add to your tribes all from the same screen.

Board Lists

If you consistently pin the same pin to multiple boards (common for those of us who are members of many group boards), it can get tedious to pin over and over .  . . and over again. Plus, it’s not unusual to lose track of where you have and haven’t pinned. Or the board name is too generic for you to remember what is supposed to go in there.

With board lists you create a list and add all of the boards that you want to pin to in one go. For example, I have a list of boards that are specific to social media pins; another list that is for general business/entrepreneurship; another list for productivity, etc.

Besides the one time, simple set up, these lists save me time every week!

Tailwind Tribes

Tribes just might be the most amazing thing ever. For Pinterest, at least. They are essentially group boards with enhanced tracking features and better useability.

With a free account you can join up to 5 tribes. You can also create your own tribes, and these don’t count toward your 5 tribe limit.

When you add pins to tribes, you will be able to see how many repins you received overall, on a group basis, and on a pin-by-pin basis. You can also see which users you received those repins from, so you can return the favour or send them a thank you message. Finally you can see if sharing your pins in targeted groups is actually getting you a return!

Note: With the free account you are limited to adding 30 pins a month to each tribe, so be strategic about what you’re adding. For tribes that you create, you can add 20 pins outside of your monthly limit when you get started.

Insights

Pinterest has its own valuable insights, but Tailwind has a few additional stats that are helpful.

Board Insights

This is helpful to find out whether a particular board is performing well - if you see your own boards doing well, you know that you are putting out the right content. Alternatively, if they are not getting a lot of follows or repins, you need to take a look at what you can change with the board - maybe the title or description could be improved, maybe the quality of pins isn’t good enough, or maybe it’s just a topic your audience isn’t interested in.

It’s also good to use this to evaluate the group boards you belong to - no point in wasting time pinning to groups that aren’t seeing a lot of activity.
 

Pin Inspector (Re-Schedule This Pin)

The pin inspector allows you to filter the pins that are from your website and view their analytics. I’d recommend sorting by repins and then re-scheduling your most popular content to new, relevant boards (or the same board providing you’ve pinning other things there in between!).

What Your Free Account Won’t Do

If you really need to set it and forget it when it comes to your Pinterest posting, then you are going to have to invest in a paid account for about $115/year. Once you have used up your free trial, your Pinterest queue will no longer auto-publish. You can continue to add items to the queue, but you have to log in to Tailwind and click the ‘pin now’ button.
