Where to Find Free Stock Video

category: video type: blog video

If you aren't a videographer (either by profession or by hobby), chances are you've avoided making any videos to share on social media beyond a few Facebook Lives or streaming your desktop as you do a tutorial. But what about those fun or informative videos that have a bunch of clips edited together? You know: the Now This and BuzzFeed style videos that seem to be all over your social media feeds. Below I've linked to some websites where you can get great video clips for free.

This post will be continuously updated as new sites are brought to my attention. New additions are bolded.

Since websites can change their terms and conditions or their usage licenses at any time, please remember to double-check the license on any stock footage that you download. If you find that any of the information listed below is no longer accurate please let me know!

You’ll Need to Give Attribution

Generally, this requires either linking back to the website on the page that the video is embedded or putting a credit roll at the end of the video saying something like “Stock footage provided by _______.”

Attribution Appreciated, But Not Required

COPYRIGHT & Licensing

On the internet, everything is copyrighted unless it is public domain (like 'Happy Birthday' - imagine if we had to pay a quarter every time we sang it) or the creator explicitly opts out of their copyright (this is known as a CC0 license). CC0 means that there are no rights reserved on the videos and you can use them however you want. Straight from creativecommons.org:

"CC0 enables scientists, educators, artists and other creators and owners of copyright- or database-protected content to waive those interests in their works and thereby place them as completely as possible in the public domain, so that others may freely build upon, enhance and reuse the works for any purposes without restriction under copyright or database law."

Some of the stock video sites above offer their images under CC0. When you do have to provide attribution, sometimes it’s stated in plain English, and sometimes you’ll see CC by 3.0 - that’s the Creative Commons version of attribution required.

If you know anyone else who could use these resources, please share!
